In a remarkable offensive display, Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Pavin Smith launched three home runs and drove in a career-high eight runs to lead his team to a 12-6 victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday night. Arizona Diamondbacks’ Pavin Smith celebrates after his three run home run against the Houston Astros during the second inning of a baseball game Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, in Houston

Smith Joins Exclusive Club

With his trio of long balls, Smith became just the second Diamondback to accomplish the feat this season, joining Eugenio Suárez, who hit three homers against the Washington Nationals on July 30. The franchise record for home runs in a single game still belongs to J.D. Martinez, who blasted four against the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 4, 2017.

Early Fireworks Set the Tone

Smith wasted no time making his presence felt, as he followed back-to-back singles in the second inning with a towering shot that struck the right field foul pole, giving the D-Backs an early lead. In the third inning, with Arizona already up 4-0, Smith stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a grand slam off Astros starter Justin Verlander, the third grand slam of his career.

“Just one of those nights where you’re in a zone,” Smith said of his performance. “Obviously, Justin’s a great pitcher. I faced him before, and he’s got great stuff, so once I was able to put a good swing the first at-bat it gave me confidence the rest of the game.”

Smith’s Heroics Keep D-Backs in Wild Card Hunt

The Diamondbacks, who have scored 10 or more runs a major league-leading 18 times this season, pulled within a half-game of the San Diego Padres for the National League’s first wild card spot with the win. They also increased their lead over the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves to 1.5 games.

Verlander Struggles in Return from Injury

On the other side of the diamond, Astros ace Justin Verlander endured a rough outing in just his fourth start since returning from the injured list. The veteran right-hander surrendered eight runs on eight hits over three innings, failing to record a strikeout for only the third time in his illustrious 381 regular-season starts. Despite the loss, Houston maintains a 4.5-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the AL West.

A Night to Remember

Smith’s eight RBIs fell just one short of the Diamondbacks’ single-game record, set by Erubiel Durazo in 2002. The 26-year-old entered the game hitting .247 with four home runs on the season, but he matched his entire 2023 home run total in this one historic game alone. The performance gives him seven long balls and 26 RBIs in 2024.

“It’s something that not many people have done, and I figure if you have the chance you might as well go for it,” Smith said of his attempt to hit a fourth home run, which ultimately ended in a strikeout and a walk in his final two plate appearances.
